This semester of EN 101 was very educational. I learned a lot. It was also refreshing in a certain area of writing. Going into En 101, I was coming from English classes that were either APs or honors, so I had previous experience in writing a lot of essays. In my AP classes, we focus a lot on rhetorical analysis papers. So when I was introduced to my first essay in EN 101, I had a lot of experience with it.
At the beginning of the semester, the first essay was a rhetorical analysis, which was up to the students to pick between the three prompts to write about. One of the prompts that I choose was written by Cheryl Strayed who wrote to college students at The University of Alabama on their upcoming graduation with the degree/ minor in English/Creative. This essay was a breeze, since coming from AP and Honors classes, I had an idea of the style to write each of these paper. I didn’t find anything hard about this essay, I found it essay to identify each of the rhetorical devices. My favorite thing about this paper was reading Strayed’s letter to the students. I found its inspiration and liked how it appealed to the rhetorical devices. The one thing I wished that I could improve on was my writing steps. I wish I put more effort in the beginning and put more thought into what I was going to write. Overall, the paper was not so bad and in the process learned a thing or two from the letter. The second paper that was written was a Personal Narrative. For this paper, I had the hardest time with. In the beginning, I had no clue what I was going to write. I went into this feeling horrible. I tried to come up with a variety of things to write about. In the beginning, I wrote a blog post on an idea for my paper. For that post, I couldn’t think of anything to write about so I came up with the first thing, which was to write about my first job, babysitting. After much thought, I didn’t feel passionate about it and couldn’t find interest in it. I then choose to write about my whole life and pick bits and pieces to it. So I wrote about my friends and how they helped me in my life from elementary up till college. For the next assignment, the podcast, which was taking the Personal Narrative into this next assignment. This was the hardest assignment out of the whole semester. It was more of my partner and trying to find a common message in both of our narratives was the most difficult. The one thing I wished was done in this assignment was to book the training early so that my partner and I had enough time to record and edit. I felt overwhelmed after recording the assignment because I had no time to do it all. My overall favorite thing about the Eportfolio was designing it. I loved designing the blog and adding my own creativity to it. Since I wanted to add a lot of color to my page without going too overboard with it so I added things like gifs and pictures. I added gifs and pictures that were in accordance with each topic for my blog post or papers.
